Thus the formula presents a sizable obstacle at the very beginning, which is not easy to overcome. This, undoubtedly, is the most serious weakness of the constant-dollar method. (A partial solution to the problem appears in the following chapter.) It appears in some other formulas, too, but does not usually place such severe limitations on the plan’s operations. On the plus side, however,it may be said that few periods in the market would have proved completely disastrous as a starting point. Many contractual plans make it possible for shareholders to designate a beneficiary who will succeed to the plan and to ownership of the underlying shares held by the planholder upon his death. Costs assessed on contractual plans are the selling charge, which usually scales down from 8 per cent as the aggregate investment increases; a small federal issuance tax levied on the face amount of the program at time of issuance; a fee to the custodian or trustee; and, often, insurance premiums. The investor making small monthly payments will be charged appreciably more on a contractual plan than on a voluntary plan. To bring these generalities into sharper focus and offer a specific example, a description of the accumulation plans offered by one fund will be outlined. In order to open a “Voluntary Open Account,” an investor either (1) indicates that he owns at least ten shares of the Fund, or (2) makes an initial investment of at least $150, or (3) forwards for deposit ten Fund shares. He states his intention, on an application form, to make additional purchases of at least $50 each at regular monthly or quarterly intervals.

The company’s policy is not to concentrate its holdings in any particular industry or group of industries, although it may do so under unusual economic or market conditions. Group Securities, Incorporated This company divides its investments into separate funds, as follows: The Common Stock Fund, the Capital Growth Fund, Fully Administered Fund, Institutional Bond Fund, and General Bond Fund. It also includes the following subdivisions: Automobile Shares, Aviation Shares, Building Shares, Chemical Shares, Electronics and Electrical Equipment Shares, Food Shares, Industrial Machinery Shares, Railroad Bond Shares, Railroad Equipment Shares, Steel Shares, Tobacco Shares, and Utilities Shares. The basic purpose of the group securities structure was to permit group investing to be more closely applied to the personal objectives of the investor. Earlier in 1961, sponsors proposed the merger of twelve of the fourteen special industry funds into the existing Common Stock Fund and the merger of two bond funds into the existing General Bond Fund.
