Well-chosen new issues usually do considerably better, percentagewise, than their blue-chip brothers of the respective field. The accompanying table lists companies which have gone public only recently. They are picked mainly because of available information. However, since they are among the well-known new issues, they tend to be favored by the market, with the less well-known and less favored ones neglected. While practically all tabulated issues have shown rather substantial or even spectacular gains during one period, as shown in the 3-27-61 price column, it would be extremely dangerous to assume that these high prices were justified or compatible with their inherent values. Many of them were not, as their later severe correction can testify and is shown by their 11-29-61 price column which, in many cases, represents quite a slash!

By September 1958, the Fund referred to the increase in its investment in some stocks that were expected to show better earnings with business recovery. Some of these were cyclical, such as metal and mining and steel, which presumably were at higher prices than in the last quarter of 1957. By November 30, 1960, when net assets exceeded $1 billion, the Fund had securities in 187 companies. The backlog of bonds and preferred stocks was increased from 32 per cent to 38 per cent during 1959 and to 42 per cent by April 1, 1960. At the close of the 1960 fiscal year (November 30), the backlog of senior securities was again down to 39 per cent of assets. In the spring of 1961, a more conservative and selective common stock policy was adopted.
